Street League to launch in Newcastle

Street League has named Newcastle as the site for its third project, adding to existing operations in London and Glasgow. The initiative will be launched during 2008/09 and follows the award of a £1million grant from Sport Relief to further improve and expand the charity’s work over the next five years.

Chief Executive Damian Hatton said: “There are many cities where Street League can have a positive impact and where we hope to work in the future, but Newcastle had all the right ingredients at the right time. This particularly included high levels of our target group of 16+ disadvantaged youths, evidence of many and diverse organisations keen to work in partnership with Street League, our successful delivery of Your Game in partnership with the BBC, and of course the great love of football in the city.”

The Sport Relief grant awarded in 2007 will also enable Street League to improve and expand operations in London and Glasgow where the charity currently works with more than 1000 individuals on a regular basis through a range of sports and education activities.

Hatton concluded, “Street League has developed an effective model that can now be replicated in other parts of the country. This is an exciting time for the charity and for sport development as a whole, as the achievements of the sector become increasingly recognised.”
