Liam Sears (18) started the Street League programme after being unemployed for six months since leaving Sixth Form College. He was finding it difficult to decide what he wanted to do with his future. Liam started our Football Academy in October 2017. Liam was unsure where to find work and what industry he would like to work in. Kirsty Armstrong (Progressions Coordinator) helped Liam develop an action plan and goals to work towards within the 10 week programme. Liam said, “I just wanted to start working and earning money”. Liam attended every session and particularly enjoyed the football sessions ran by the Street League Football coach Adam Taylor.

Liam produced a CV and attended a mock interview with HMRC at the Liverpool Academy. Liam said

“The interview gave me confidence and the feedback gives me something to work on in future interviews”.

Liam worked with Pauline Miller Street League’s Employer Engagement Manager to find a suitable work placement that best fitted his skills. Liam expressed an interest in retail and media. Liam was set up an interview with Darren Burns the National Recruitment Ambassador for The Timpson Group who also run Max Spielmann. Liam was offered a two work placement at a Max Spielmann branch in Liverpool. During this time

Street League visited Liam on work placement, to ensure the placement was right for him and that it was going well. After the two weeks, Liam was offered a full time job at Max Spielmann and started straight away. Liam expressed “I could not have found a full time job without the help of all the Street League staff”.

Liam is still engaging with Street League through our Aftercare Coordinator Richie Bowsley. Richie keeps in regular contact with Liam to ensure he can sustain his employment. Liam has been working at Max Spielmann for eight weeks now and his manager has been really impressed with how he is settling in. Liam believes Street League helped him build the confidence to apply for jobs he wouldn’t have done before and shown him how the skills he has are relevant to the job market.

“Street League is quality. Kirsty, Adam, Hayley and Holly are all sound. Wish I could stay forever. Looking forward to seeing Richie in aftercare” Liam Sears.
