The health benefits of dance fitness Street League Dance Fit uses a unique dance fitness and education programme to support unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds into work and training. Operating in three cities – Glasgow, London and Birmingham – and soon to be running in Manchester and Liverpool, the new social enterprise is supported by Founding Partners, Barclays. But why dance fitness, and what are the health benefits of incorporating it into Street League Dance Fit’s unique employability programme? Here they are listed below: • Improved condition of your heart and lungs • Increased muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness • Increased aerobic fitness • Improved muscle tone and strength • Weight management • Stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis • Better coordination, agility and flexibility • Improved balance and spatial awareness • Increased physical confidence • Improved mental functioning • Improved general and psychological wellbeing • Greater self-confidence and self-esteem • Better social skills On top of the above health benefits from taking part in dance fitness, Street League Dance Fit enables a young person to feel part of something, get into a routine and be offered support in finding a job and securing a pathway for their future moving forward, making the Academy programme hugely impactful in more ways than one. Gayle, Street League Dance Fit's Glasgow dance fitness teacher, agrees that dance fitness can play a vital role in benefitting a young person. She said: “It lets you evaluate your day in a positive and fun light and helps each individual refocus and overcome any challenges they have.” Sophia Chitty, from Street League Dance Fit’s Hackney Academy, echoed Gayle’s sentiments and added: “Two of the biggest catalysts of mental illness are isolation and low self esteem. By engaging in dance fitness, not only are you socialising with a variety of young people, but you will also develop the skills to explore your thoughts and emotions through movement.” If you’d like to find out more about Street League Dance Fit’s Academy programme and get #movingintowork through the power of dance fitness then visit our website here.
