Street League Supports Bantamweight Champion Lee McGregor

Lee is a Scottish professional boxer who has held the Commonwealth bantamweight title since 2018, the British bantamweight title since 2019, and the European bantamweight title since March 2021. Lee has overcome many barriers in life to get to where he is today and is a proud ex-participant of our award-winning sports and employability programme. He is now looking to inspire and guide the next generation of young people through this partnership.

Steven Jardine, Street League’s Head of Operations in Scotland, was a Progressions Coordinator during Lee’s time in the programme. He said:

“Lee’s resilience and commitment was evident during his time on our Academy in Edinburgh, progressing into a Modern Apprenticeship. It is great to see him continue his rise in boxing and I’m proud that Street League has been part of his journey.”

Lee acknowledges the vital role attending Street League as a young person had in building his self-confidence and helping him form the belief that hard work and dedication were vital to achieving his dreams:

“Training has been great for this fight – there’s been many setbacks and hurdles to overcome but I’m finally here. It’s a week until the fight and I’m excited to get in the ring. I’m also delighted to be back teamed up with Street League who I was a proud member of many years ago, and I look forward to sharing my experiences with the participants on board now to show that anything is possible if you work hard!”

Since his time at Street League, Lee has utilised the skills he learned on programme to succeed in the competitive world of boxing. Lee made his professional debut on the 11th of November 2017, scoring a first-round technical knockout (TKO) victory against his opponent Stefan Sashev. Since then, his career has gone from high to high, capturing the youth bantamweight title in 2018. Now, he holds both the British and European bantamweight titles.

Last August, McGregor successfully defended his European title against Vincent Legrand before taking a break from competing due to injury. McGregor's much-anticipated return to the ring comes on the 11th of February 2022 when he faces Diego Alberto Ruiz. Everyone at Team Street League is excited to support McGregor as he gets back in the ring. Best of luck Lee!

Street League offers young people a safe environment to develop vital life skills, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging that is vital to the ability to reach their full potential.
